The only people who ever called themselves Aryans were ancient Iranics and Indo-Aryans. Aryan ethnicity was a result of mixing between Andronovo nomads (language and religion) and Bactrian-Margiana civilization (race and culture). Among modern peoples descendants of Aryans are:
- in Iran - Persians (Zoroastrians and their Islamized brethren) and related peoples (Kurds, Balochi, Tajiks).
- in India - Aryan-speaking members of "twice-born" castes (with status of Brahman, Kshatriya and Vaishya).
Other Indo-Europeans never called themselves Aryan.

Iranians are the only Aryans; everyone else who was colonized and mixed with them are Indo-Aryans.
