"The Baltic Art"

Each existing nation has its ancestors and its cultural heritage. The same way that Scandinavians are proud of being descended from the Vikings, the Irish – from the Celts and Germans – from the Germanic peoples, Lithuanians, Latvians and the Old Prussians can be proud of their ancestors – the Balts – and the reflections of their world-views in contemporary culture. Archeological findings connected to the Baltic culture and providing information about the life of our ancestors, the Balts, are scattered in the entire Europe. Unfortunately, part of them is already lost. The world wars, the Soviet occupation and other circumstances dispersed the Baltic heritage and even though many museums in Lithuania and in Europe do have exhibits illustrating the period of the Baltic existence, none can offer a thorough and comprehensive view of the Baltic art. No common exhibition, which would collect the entire Baltic heritage within the same location, has been organised as well. These are the reasons that triggered the organisation of the international exhibition illustrating the Baltic art from the first centuries of their existence up until now.
The project “The Baltic Art” attempts to draw together good-natured international efforts and, on the occasion of commemorating the millennium of the Lithuania’s name, show for the first time the art that we created and the decorations and jewelry that we wore two millennia and even more years ago. The job of collecting the samples of the Baltic art was carried out by the joint effort of the partners-museums from Lithuania, Poland, Germany and Latvia. The exhibits date back to ancient times and are, therefore, extremely fragile. Thus, the priceless jewelry and other artefacts were brought into the Museum of Applied Arts in Vilnius thanks to tremendous will, the cooperative effort of the partners, goodwill and responsibility only.
A special modern polygraphic collection of articles with numerous illustrations is published on the occasion of the exhibition “The Baltic Art” in the Lithuanian and English languages (in a printed and CD forms). The publication includes articles of the Lithuanian and foreign authors on the topic of the Baltic art. The catalogue will be available for purchase within the entire term of exhibition.
Our intention is not a mere presentation of the ancient tradition of the Baltic art but the revival of its relevance. Today, the significance and relevance of the Baltic prehistory reveals as the source of inspiration for creative work. One of the terminals of the exhibition “The Baltic Art” presents the works of art by contemporary artists – graphics, painting and interdisciplinary art based on the Baltic world-views, which focus on reflecting and rethinking the Baltic traditions.
Female played an exceptional role in the Baltic culture. Not only did the Balts worship the Mother of the Gods but also had other female goddesses responsible for the areas of the daily life. The jewelry exhibited in the exhibition “The Baltic Art” is frequently found in the female graves. To highlight and attract attention towards the role of the woman in our Baltic history, we are preparing a number of surprises for the opening ceremony of the exhibition “the Baltic Art”. Professional jewellers are producing unique jewelry, which was used by the wealthy women: such jewelry is found in the wealthiest graves only. The attendants of the exhibition will be offered to purchase unique pieces of jewelry as well as the copies and interpretations of other archeological findings of the Baltic art and cosy textile items decorated with Baltic motives. All souvenirs are handmade by professional craftsmen, therefore, the amount of the items offered for acquisition in the exhibition “The Baltic Art” is limited. .
