Geographically Spain is both Western and Southern.

I don't see Malta as Southern Europe, and due to the fact it is on the North African plate.

Southern Europe is not equivalent to Mediterranean Europe in all cases. I do not consider Portugal "Mediterranean" considering they don't even border the Mediterranean Sea.

Also, this thread has nothing to do with appearance or typology but strictly geography.

Culturally it may well be as much Atlantic as Southern. Genetics clearly show it is basically Western / South-western / Atlantic.

I just call it "Southwest Europe" and leave it at that. Atlantic and Mediterranean are arbitrary terms.

Most vegetation is Southern European. You don't grow olives, cork trees or grape vines in England. I think you guys forget that being a Western Country and a Southern Country is not mutually exclusive and that typically, due to climate, there's a bigger difference between the Northern and Southern parts of an area, like Europe, than the Western and Eastern part. Culturally, for the most part, Portugal is also Southern European. I have a lot more in common with other Spaniards, Italians or Greeks than I do with the British, Dutch, or non-Southern French.

Portugal is Southern European but we have little in common culturally with Greece and apart from Romance language speech and Catholicism, not that much with Italians either.
