And a mighty angel took up a stone like a great millstone, and cast it into the sea, saying, Thus with violence shall that great city Babylon be thrown down, and shall be found no more at all.

well in that case I agree with you 100%
but if I were you and someone did prove their worth to live, I'd still give them the death penalty later anyway. I'd tell them I wouldn't do it , since they proved themselves but I would just be fucking with them
you should give it to everyone no matter what. the world would be better off.
you could probably get elected if you took this stance on the issue during a campaign

Obviously pro. I don't care as much about punishment or institutionalized revenge, I would rather put them in labor camps and save some money out of their work. But I do care about making a statement, like parading the dead hanging corpse of a gang member around for his associates to witness and make a public promise to put the rope around their necks should they ever show their faces again. The crime should be fitting of course, something that affects a multitude of people, like a community, a city or even the whole country, not some isolated instance of a single victim. If that's the case then labor camp!

but it's not society they owe.
they owe the victims and their family or something, or whatever.
they didn't cost society anything. it doesn't effect me or you or anyone else if someone kills a total stranger who you don't even know.
how is that costing society as a whole? unless they're just a fucking serial killer or something.

the only problem with that, is how anyone convicted of a sex crime, rape, child molestation etc... can just be put in to protective custody when in prison.
sort of defeats the purpose. they suffer but not as much as their victims do. especially since they have to live with it and carry that shit the rest of their life. children who are the victims of something like that probably end up committing suicide later on when they get older half the time.
or worse.
sometimes they end up becoming the same fucking thing, because it fucked them up that much. it's been known to happen in some cases.

You see, this then just turns into a pointless vendetta between two families, and I have seen enough of those to know that nothing good comes out of it.
The key thing here is that the state should hand out the justice. As I said, it is more about psychological warfare than petty revenge. Turning the death penalty into a mere tool for families to get revenge only devalues it.
