This is what I've reasoned from the genetics. Whether people are Celtic or Germanic is mostly down to culture and not genetics. Looking at how the Insular Celts cluster with the Germanics the only obvious conclusion that can be made is that these populations were similar before these cultural tags. They must have descended from similar older populations. How else can it be explained? I think people have a difficult time getting their heads around some of these genetics because it goes against what they have been taught and how they identify.
Actually it's not that surprising. But Northern French would at least have to be close too. Basically Britain and Ireland were populated in different Pre-Celtic and Celtic waves from Northern France and Belgium and later smaller Germanic(including Norse) element were added. So I guess it is a bit unusual. What is the answer I wonder.

Yes I agree but I'm not very close to French on any Gedmatch calculators.

Maybe genetic drift makes British and Irish be further away from the primary Northern French parent population.

No I think southern English like Cornwall populations are closer. The Irish are a bit more distant.

Yes, but the origins are the same. If anything, English would have more Germanic, although not Cornish ones.

I think in some Gedmatch calculators you're almost as close to the Southwest Finns as to the French. You're a very Northern shifted British Islander. Not very far from Scandinavians.
