Hi from South Africa

Xhosa is one of the South African national languages, so I use it in my work. I understand it better than speaking, but not so good at reading it. Just the basics. Enough to get me around and gather basic information.

I am an English-speaking South African, so I suppose that would be my ethnicity. But the family is Polish and Russian.

I speak fluently English, Afrikaans and German.

Basic Xhosa.

I can read Dutch due to the Afrikaans but have difficulty understanding it.

Nederlandse uitdrukking. Dat verklaard alles. Dat verklaard waarom jij wat Xhosa spreekt. Ik denk dat jullie het op school gewoon in het vakkenpakket hebben zitten ? (zoals wij hier Engels, Duits en Frans leren).

Ja, ons kan dit op skool leer maar ek het ander vakke gehad. Die Duits het ek by die huis geleer van my ouers.

Ek het gewonder oor hoop. So jy bedoel "hoop" soos in baie. En dan is daar hoop soos die Engelse "hope". Maar nou verstaan ek. Dankie

"Hoop" kan zowel hoop betekenen als baie. Het hangt van de context af maar in dit geval bedoelde ik baie.
