    Default FTDNA: Any good? Opinions?

As luck will have it, 23andme does not ship to South Africa, but FamilyTreeDNA does.

I've been to their site and they have 2 types of mtDNA tests:

    mtDNAPlus for $159

    mtFullSequence for $299

What is the real difference between the two. The site just babbles on. I'd like to know from a real person with some experience which is better, recommended etc.

I've heard so much about 23andme and I wish they shipped here.

Good question. I'd consider an additional test to 23andme if it showed to be more thorough.

FTNDA: I liked their Y-DNA service as they frequently update their haplotree and have private SNP's that may eventually be released at later date for public haplotree if they're shown to correlate with a large enough population. I do not like their Family Finder/Population Finder, their report is ambiguous at best, the raw data is the only advantage and even then it has issues with third party analysis if I remember correctly in comparison to 23andMe because of differences in reporting.

For the all together package I'd just go with 23andMe's complete edition as to get the raw data and it is significantly less expensive than testing multiple times with FTDNA.

23andme doesn't ship to South Africa so I am trying to find an alternative which is equally good.

Get the Family Finder + mtdna and if that is too much then go for Family Finder. You can use your family finder raw data for all the various projects like Eurogenes and Dodecad.
