The Welsh are not Atlanto - Mediterraneans. That is nonsense. They are well among the palest - skinned, most freckled, ginger - haired on the face of the earth. They are closely related to the Cornish, Scottish, Irish people. They are not specifically different from other British people. Although there are different frequencies, the Welsh are less blonde - haired than the English and Scottish as a whole, with more dark hair, but they are paler than the English or just as pale. The “stereotypical” Welsh man is described as dark - haired and dark - eyed, however, this is far from the average Welshman. Most Welsh have brown hair, light - eyes and a pale, freckled skin tone. They are not short either, their rugby players are robust and tall. The most common eye colour in Wales is blue, which is a different case in Mediterranean countries. The difference in percentage for blue eyes between the Welsh and Scandinavian is not great at all.
Blue eyes %:
Denmark : 50.7
Norway & Sweden : 50
Wales : 45
Germany : 30
Belgium : 28.9
France : 20.2
Italy : 10.3
Portugal : 7.5

The English are equidistant between the Welsh and Dutch. In a wider European context there is massive overlap, but at face value it has now been surmised that the English share 30% of their DNA with those from Cymru. Anyhow, I would say the Welsh are sort of intermediate between the Irish/Northern French. In the bigger picture, I wouldn't say the Welsh differ markedly from their neighboring brethren, but they do seem to have less 'wonky' features than the English or Irish.

I'd expect the Welsh are somewhere between the English and Irish, as they retained their Brythonic form and a lot of the Britons fleeing the Anglo-Saxons moved into Wales. The Anglo-Saxons have a heavy presence there too, which would tie them in with Scotland and England.

If you go by genetics the people that overlap with the Welsh the most are in this order; the English, the Scots and then the Irish.

This is Anglo propaganda, there is a higher neolithic survival in Wales and the Silurians were a tribe noted by their dark looks but the other tribes were more 'caledonian' according to the Romans. There is a dark stereotype but this is an Anglo derived historical 'otherness' inherited over centuries.
