    Default City icons

    Some cities have a clear well-established icon, such as Paris, London, Rome, Barcelona, Athens, Moscow, San Francisco, Sydney... In some cases, it's fairly recent, as the Guggenheim in Bilbao. When those icons are shown in a film, we automatically know the city we're in.

    But there are many other cities out there without a definite, relevant or well-known icon. Others may have more than one, all being of a similar relevance. Feel free to post and discuss what you consider to be the main icons of any cities world-wide.

    Sadly, a lot of the old smoke stacks are gone now, but it would have to be our 'dark Satanic mills' for Manchester:

    Or the canal system, much of which dates to the 1700s;

    My favourite bit of Town;

    FUCK!

    For the modern, the very new Beetham Tower should be on the list, with its peculiar overhang (there's a bar in there, and you can stand on the glass floor panel and look down! ):

    I like those pics! The area has a distinctive hard-to-describe sight to my eyes, pretty much as if I'd like to film something in there.

    Cool. up

    Definitely. And it's no coincidence that I felt at home in the Moscow suburbs!

    Heh, funny thing is; Manchester IS used as a location for a LOT of films, Hollywood ones too, but it rarely plays itself!

    With a bit of tweaking of signage and so on, Manchester has stood in for ... let me see... Victorian London (that recent Sherlock Holmes film), New York, and others.

    Ah yes, and some of that new 'Captain America' was filmed here too!

    Alex, if you asked people here, they'd certainly mention the bridge.

    Probably our Lifeboat Station, small but cute

    And also our derelict copperworks, which was the biggest in the world in the 19th century
