The Falklands were uninhabited upon settlement by the British.

That's definitely not true. I posted this on another thread:

Anyway, history goes like this:

- The french discovered and settled the islands.

- The english also settled the islands (apparently not knowing the french were already there)

- The french sold the islands to the spanish

- The english and spanish engaged in war for the islands, and later agreed to split the islands between themselves. West part was english and east part was spanish.

- Argentina became independent from Spain and the spanish left the islands. The islands became abandoned for about 10 years.

- Argentina started a real settlement of the Islands and sent people to live there.

- The english came and expelled the argentines by brute force.

So in theory, Argentina is right in claiming the eastern part of the Islands at least.
