Default Not another 'map your surname' thread!

Unfortunately, yes. I think this one is the best I have had the pleasure of typing my surname into.
It presents you with the sources, stats and various other interesting and vital information about your surname over Europe, US and Australia/NZ

    Map Your Name

First we create a database containing the names of 360,000,000 adults currently living in Western Europe, the United States and Australia.
To create each map we then count the number of adults who bear a particular name for each of 746 regions in 12 countries. Click here to find more about the sources of data we used to create these counts
For each region we then divide the number of adults bearing any particular name (or type of name) by the total number of adults in that region. We express this as a rate per million adults. For example the name ‘Schmidt’ is borne by xxxxxxx adults per million adults in Nebraska.
Next we calculate the corresponding rate per million adults for that name across the entire database, ie for all the adults in the countries for which we have data. For example the name ‘Schmidt’ is borne by xxxxxx adults per million adults in our database.
Finally for each of the 746 regions we divide the number of adults per million adults with that particular name (such as ‘Schmidt’) with the corresponding rate for the database. By this means we can find whether a region has a higher or lower than world average incidence of the name (such as ‘Schmidt’). This then enables us to rank all the regions from high to low according to how common a particular name is compared with other parts of the world. The darker the colour on the map the more common a name is among the inhabitants of the region it denotes.

Unfortunately there is no option for Canada, though I can imagine my surname would predominantly be found in Québec.

I did a search of my surname in its current spelling in Europe it is most frequently found in northern France, particularly in Lower Normandy (Manche, Orne and Calvados) as well as in Sarthe and Eure-et-Loire regions, which makes sense. Almost none at all in southern France. I was surprised to see pockets in Trier and Sodermanland too. Overall, the further you get from Normandy the surname's frequency declines drastically.

This is the distribution of my personal name (which has been running in my family consecutively for centuries):

This area is incidentally also where the vast majority of my ancestors come from -- Netherlands and adjacent areas of Northern Germany.

The colour you see Ireland shaded in is the norm for the rest of Europe.

I am very impressed with this site. The map shows exactly the geography of my surname. You see the darkest red is on the top of Jutland? This is where my family have lived for centuries. This land is mine!

I see that it is somewhat used in Norway and Sweden too. They do so without my permission.

I should mention that my surname is not a typical -sen or -son-name.

I'm surprised with this part of my ancestry. I thought it was German, but it seems more prevalent in Sweden and Netherlands.

I was surprised to find the name "Western" (one of our many old family names) in D range in Oppland and Buskerudd Norway. It was most represented in Exeter, which is across from Normandy. (I read somewhere this was a Norman name, I've wondered about its authenticity.)

My surname is found most heavily in Sheffield, Trent, Lincoln and Exeter. My father's surname is found most heavily in Wales, but with significant representation in Connacht Ireland. (My father's side is from both Galway and non-NI Ulster.) Other family names on my mother's side also show up heavily in Sheffield. My paternal German great grandparents' names are most heavily represented in Haut-Rhine, Bremerhaven, Bas-Rhine, so the Rheinland (excepting Bremerhaven) perhaps they are Pennsylfaani Deutsch! My dad's family has been in Pittsburgh PA, for a long time.

Mine says: origin the Netherlands, can not be "mapped" without a vliegen-"mepper" (flyswatter)
I presume they are telling me to have myself squashed by Loki, all over the Dutch map

Perhaps, though there are not too many Deitsch in the western parts of PA. Most often they are forty-eighters.

My surname isn't popular even here - there are only few other families with it (not our relatives). It could be found (the same or with similar roots) only in FYROM, Serbia, Ukraine, Russia, Poland, Hungary and so on.
But that doesn't mean they have the same origins or connection at all, since it appears to be strictly typical for the region of Northwestern Bulgaria surname forming and end form. Just a coincidence.
