Starting off in Tyrol - the town of Hall:

It's a state rich in natural beauty:

June in the Austrian Tyrol by John MacWhirter (painted in 1892):

Bergbauer sein . . .

In 1848, Napoléon comes to power in France, the US is at war with Mexico, and Austria looks at the recently-invented steam train and says "I reckon we could get one of these things over the Alps". Today I am exploring the stunning result, the Semmeringbahn - built before anyone had even invented a train capable of running on it. It is the world's first standard-gauge mountain railway, an incredible piece of engineering history, and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. *** Check out my previous video on the Wuppertal Schwebebahn: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9IFh6...

In the 1920s, as America started to go dizzy for skyscrapers, the Vienna city council built an enormous apartment block. But instead of going a long way up, they went a long way along - more than 1km long, in fact. Why did they build it? And is it the longest building in the world? I went to Heiligenstadt to find some answers.

Find out what happened when a tiny American unit joined forces with German soldiers to rescue French VIPs from the SS at a castle in Austria in the last days of WW2.
    In the village:

    The church:

Wake up and smell the coffee.

Wake up and smell the coffee.
