In my childhood, my father told my siblings and I about how he grew up during the blitzes of Malta, and he only told us once. Both the British and Germans lent a hand in the relentless bombings which took place over an 18 month period, because Malta was a strategic stronghold for the Meditteranean trade routes. A stronghold the Brits were protecting and what the Germans and Italians coveted. It was so bad a place that once my dad and his family left for good, he never returned - I guess the memories were just too painful. I'm afraid the younger folk of this forum would rather praise the deeds rather than see that there are two sides to war - and the side so little mentioned thus far has been that of what would have felt like eternal misery and suffering.

As much as I could admire Hitler's drive and determination to make Germany a better place for his people, I can't glorify how he went about it. Although there were others in the top rank and file of his armed forces who carried out his work, he was still the supreme chancellor and commander and the decisions he made rested wholly and solely with him. And since both my grandfathers fought for the British Crown, I will never forget what they did in the hope of a better future for their families.

By the way, I know I'm being pedantic but the correct term would be 123rd.

I don't think forget is the right word, "putting it behind us" sounds more apt. The Napoleonic Wars are behind us now, as the older folks start dying off so too should the world wars be consigned to history.
