Most people would like to believe that racial discrimination is becoming increasingly rare and unacceptable in mainstream society.

But a new study suggests that African-Americans still face subtle prejudice in at least one area of life - dining out.

A survey of waiters in North Carolina revealed that nearly two-fifths admitted to treating customers differently depending on their race.

I've never been a food-server/waiter before but I have worked in retaurants (kitchen) in the past. I distictly remember the wait-staff talking about how blacks don't tip well, if at all. Here in the US, somewhere around 75-80% of a server's income is via tipping, so a lack thereof is a big deal.

Are they not tipping because they are bad tippers in nature or are they not tipping because they get bad service (for being black). The income of black Americans is also lower than white Americans on average so them tipping less wouldn't be all that surprising. Immigrants of all colours also typically tip less compared to the native population, should we treat them like crap at restaurants too?

There was a time when tipping meant something. Now everyone wants their 15% regardless of the service they provide.

When I was in my late teens, I worked at one of the fancier hotels downtown. It would regularly host visiting NBA teams - multimillionaires. I got hit on by those apes more than I got tipped by them. I think one time I got $1.25.
