ISLAM,
A religion which has got stuck in the first millennium. "Burn all the books for their value is in this one." I.e., the "glorious" Qur'an. Muslims have never progressed beyond the Prophet's mediaeval mindset.
Oh, but the Muslims preserved the writings of the ancient Greek thinkers in astronomy and mathematics. Yes, because ancient Greek science was so primitive that it had not reached the point of conflicting with Islam.
Excerpt for naming a few hundred stars, the Muslims did not progress beyond Greek astronomy . Their only advance beyond Greek mathematics (aside from borrowing from India the numerals we now call Arabic) was a paper outlining the rudiments of algebra, published in 830.
Greek philosophy, the revival of which helped bring about the Renaissance in Europe, fostered two things utterly anathema to the authoritarianism of Islam: doubt and thought. The Muslims did NOT prerserve or even respect Greek philosiophy.
Europe had the Renaissance to civilise it. Although, Christianity can be every bit as authoritarian as Islam, the church accepted Aristotle and it has been said that, if he hadn't been pre-Christian, he might well have become a saint.
Aristotle's thought had a rationalising effect on Christian theology. Nothing ever rationalised Islam. Europe became civilised but the Islamic world retained the savagery of the desert tribes who flocked to the Prophet's banner.
Islam is the anchor which holds back the Arab world.
