The British companies control the oil? This sounds rather strange, considering that the Arab nations can build all those extremely expensive buildings although they have nothing but oil on which economical success could be based on.

Yes, the British control the oil companies, if any one of those nation nationalize the oil, then the treatment of Iraq will be given to them. Of course Iraq had other things. The British indirectly control the region, with American permission slips you can say. Most people know this, and some American companies. The monarchies in the region are basically under the British crown lol.

The 'relative' wealth of these nations will sink to the normal level of Arabia when their oil reserves are exhausted. They need guest workers from China or poorer Arab countries and architects/engineers from Europe to build and create such modern towns and buildings. They can't do it by themselves.

I don't know Qatar or their wealth that well to reply to that, nor i'm that interested in doing so. My post was because i was reading a thread called "why is the arab world so backwards" and i thought of this:

Unlike Judaism and Christianity, Islam has not been able to progress. This has held the Arab world back. The fact that Muslims want to bring Sharia Law to Europe is the scary result.

Aristotle's thought had a rationalising effect on Christian theology. Nothing ever rationalised Islam. Europe became civilised but the Islamic world retained the savagery of the desert tribes who flocked to the Prophet's banner.

Islam is the anchor which holds back the Arab world.

Well if they controlled their oil they would put it on free market biding and peg the value of oil to any other currency than dollar or pound

Um Israel has conquered "Palastine" rather easily and if it wasn´t for international pressure they probably would have driven all Arabs out of the Westbank. And even a coalition of several Arab nations were not able to destroy Israel, although they tried it repeatedly... Just saying from a neutral perspective...

Israel did not fully subdue Palestine. It can't even control Gaza or the West bank. It might have won against the Arab coalition was because for some reason the Jordanian forces retreated, and caused confusion and other reasons but the fight seemed to be even, as well Israel got support from the Western world the Arabs got zlich but they still fought well.

I mean really, putting all culture, etc, aside, it is plain obvious that the Arab nations are hopelessly inferior to "the West" in terms of military strength.

Of course, but they are not easy to conquor, nor they will be subdue totally in submission. The superior technology of the Americans did not even make a difference in Iraq for example. The Americans could never dare to enter the Syrian Desert regions of Iraq again, as they were utterly humiliated by a ragtag nomadic tribes, and the Americans were also not used to Desert warfare, they were made to retreat, so technology means nothing it's how use the of environment that shows the cunning and intelligent ability to defeat the more technological advanced opponent. Every single move of the Americans in Iraq especially in the Western regions was met with defeat.

These are still the people who built cities and had indoor plumbing while our ancestors were still rolling in their own dung and eating their own boils for nourishment.

You really must be kidding. All they would have to do is to kill some stone-throwing teenagers. They cannot stop terrorism, as they are bound by international law. If they simply wanted to control those territories they would bomb out all Arabs in the Westbank and Gaza in two or three days.
