Terrible and biased article. It forgot the contribution to the world of many peoples, starting from the Middle Ages Muslims, the Chinese, the Amerindians and the peoples of India. Yes, the Industrial Revolution and the Scientific Revolution were very important, but.... but... Euro-centrism sucks.

While I agree that the modern world was crafted by Western Europeans, although this was for their own purposes and not as a selfless gift to humanity. I am cognizant of the fact that Western Civilization is primarily responsible for most of the technological, economic and social progress of the past few centuries. To be fair, for a millenia prior to the modern age, Europe was quite backward in comparison to other Eurasian civilizations, and Europe also borrowed heavily in terms of innovations in technology, society, economics, etc. Guns, Cannons, movable rudders, movable sails, watertight compartments, compasses were all Chinese inventions and Columbus would not have been able to sail to the Americas without these inventions, and that was really the catalyst for the rise of Western Europe. With that said however, I admire Western Civilization for the progress it's brought to humanity in the last few centuries. With the increasingly democratic access to technology, education and wealth and the rise of China and India, I think the future will also see many innovations being contributed again by non-Western countries, especially China and India.

They had some major role in long long past, but what they contributed in last 1000 years? Those who place Greece high should place as high as Greece middle eastern ancient states as well. But they are usualy forgotten, because they are brown now obviously.

The only period that Greeks contributed little was when Greeks were under Ottoman rule. Even then, the Greeks who fled to Italy contributed to the European Renaissance. The Byzantine empire contributed quite a lot, even the Cyrillic Alphabet you now use was invented by two Greek monks from Thessaloniki.

cyrillic alphabet is very minor achievment to be honest. cyrillic, latin or even posibile shittilic could serve jsut as well.
Any particular alphabet is not important unlike literacy itself which was invented in Sumer (Sumer is in grade 5, so they are not forgotten)

Why is Germany ahead of France? France contributed more than Germany.

Greeks are high because of their contribution to western civilization in general. They invented and brought about many original concepts. Its a shame that everyone goes gaga over Rome though. Greeks deserve more credit than Romans.
