Why are Croats so dark?

i know a few Croats and they are quite dark and often show Turanid influences. Croatia itself is almost in central europe but still they have many dark people, how come?

To back you up;
Eastern Roman Emperor of 10th century, Constantine VII Porphyrogenitus wrote about the surrounding peoples of Byzantine lands in his book named "De Administrando Imperio". He says that they captured Dalmatia which was under Turkic Avars possession before.

They intermarried with Avars and early Hungarians. The emperor says that Croats get along well with Avars and Hungarians, so it wasn't about rapes only. The emperor says "Turks" here but they are early Hungarians. They were called as Turks at that time;
