Default Who here has Asperger's Syndrome?

I was diagnosed when I was very young.. it's evident in much of my behavior, both on here and in real life.. all of my repeated threads with the same exact pattern and theme are testament to this.

Who else has Asperger's? How has it impacted your life?

I don't have it, but two dear friends of mine do. Both of them are fairly high-functioning. Their most difficult obstacles seem to be filtering what they say and maintaining eye contact.

I'm diagnosed with Asperger. I do not really think much about it, to me it's just a label I have gotten from a psychiatrist.

I was diagnosed by one doctor but then four other doctors said no.

I have been told that I have some Asperger's characteristics, plus OCD, neither of which are formal diagnoses.

    Asperger's Syndrome + OCD + Social Anxiety.

I like to define the Aspeger's Syndrome in three areas:

    Specialized interest

    Sensory overload

    Social Interactions

I have many specialized interests that take up most of my time. These interests fall within science and mathematics, but I also have other interests as well. When I develop a new interest, I will spend at least 5 hours a day "playing" with it. Usually this consists of reading, testing experiments, and thinking about it constantly. It is almost an obsession. All I will do is talk about this interest, and I lose any sense of reciprocation in conversations, lacking theory of mind, and the ability to empathize.

My sensory overload can get quite bad. Usually, it will start out alright, but as time passes and if the causes or pressures to my senses increase I get increasingly uneasy. The biggest concern is movement. If too many people move around me, I will freeze up, involuntarily. Usually this only lasts a few seconds, and I used to think this was normal for everybody. Then there's noise; this is probably the most distracting. Usually it is a problem only if the noise is sporadic, meaning there is no pattern to it. Certain sounds also bother me. Anything like a bass to a stereo, that has very strong vibrations that can be felt affect me, and I usually freeze up or get very angry(I mean very angry.) Then there is texture of certain foods. I can't eat ground beef, unless it's cooked a certain way, or I'll vomit involuntarily. I don't mind the taste, but I absolutely hate the texture of it. If many of these occur at once, I can either freeze up for minutes, or I'll have a meltdown where I isolate myself or pace with very methodological thought-processes, usually my special interest, to calm me.

Finally, there are my problems with social interactions. This isn't quite that pronounced compared to the other two. Usually, as I said, I lose any reciprocation if I get involved with an interest. Other than that, I have some trouble with subtle sarcasm(if it's not inflected in the tone), and especially have trouble if people say things they don't mean, or hint with their body language. I have trouble if a social event is changed sporadically, and I can't persist in groups. Being in a group larger than 3 just makes me feel wrong. Overall, I don't empathize with too many people, with the exception of a select few. I've also been described as too blunt, over-analytical, and a party crasher. Mostly because I can't comprehend some social functions and jokes, but many jokes I do understand and laugh at, sometimes it takes a while.

All of these characteristics have been common since I was young, but since I had high grades, and my parents weren't really the type of parents to look at development stages and see if I correlated, it was overlooked until recently - a year ago. Mostly, my parents just thought it was my personality that caused these characteristics. I saw a psychiatrist, after a particularly horrible meltdown; he diagnosed me with OCD and Social Anxiety Disorder. I believed the psychiatrist wasn't thorough, and at that point I chose to have another psychiatric evaluation with somebody more thorough. I was then diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome, and HFA(High Functioning Autism) was only left out because there was no evidence of language delay.

My experience is very similar to Stefan. Some examples in my own life, I will describe a bit here.

When I was younger I was afraid of anything that made loud noises, and to some extent I still am. Fire alarms fucking freak me out, and they always have. In elementary school, I would react very strongly whenever one would go off, and even was hesitant to go out in the hallway to walk to the bathroom, for instance, because I was afraid it would go off at any given moment. The first instance when my teachers realized I was likely to have Asperger's was due to that, and my reaction to other loud noises and vibrations (I was afraid to go in the elevator at school because I hated the feeling of the floor as it vibrated, and the humming sound of the elevator). My mom also says I was afraid of grandfather clocks, and the rustling of a plastic bag, when I was very young (age 2 or 3).

I also, when I was younger, used to be incredibly captivated by everyday objects, and would become obsessed with specific ones for lengthy periods of time.. I used to collect chapsticks, for instance, and took them with me in a bag everywhere I went. I also used to have an obsession with cotton swabs.

I also strongly believe my need to make threads such as "Does group x overlap with group y", and the repeated pattern they all follow, and the need to get infinitely many opinions on each one, stems from my Asperger's.

Yes, I have Autism Lite TM / Doctor Asparagus Disease, with similar experiences to those above.

Ensuring that my needs are met has been difficult, because I present well, and people assume that I am simply lazy, nasty, difficult, insensitive... Which of course I am, but not so much as it would appear to the untrained eye.
