    None of the above;

    Modern Macedonians are descendents of Slavic tribes who mixed with the native Paleo-Balkanic peoples of Macedonia from the 6th century onwards.

    The Macedonian Academy of Sciences and Arts accepts that as a whole the modern Macedonian genotype developed as a result of the absorption by the advancing Slavs of the local peoples living in the region of Macedonia prior to their coming. This position is backed by the findings of most ethnographers such as Vasil Kanchov, Gustav Weigand, and the anthropologist Carleton S. Coon, which state that the Slavs in 6th century actively assimilated other tribal peoples by absorbing part of the indigenous populations of the area, including Hellenes, Thracians and Illyrians. By absorbing parts of the peoples living there the Slavs also absorbed their culture, and in that amalgamation a people was gradually formed with predominantly Slavic ethnic elements, speaking a Slavonic language and with a Slavic-Byzantine culture. Furthermore, the genetic studies support the theories that Macedonians genetic heritage is derived from a mixture of ancient Balkan peoples as well as the relatively newly arrived Slavs with deep European roots.

    Another Poll with no right answer to pick up. Ever since the fist human beings settled in the area later on named macedonia the history of the macedonians and macedonia started to fill its pages..going forth up to the present days the macedonias developed over time so the slavs are just one milestone of that national development... simplifying the whole issue is ridiculous ..the macedoians are not pure slavs nor pure not salvs..we are all of them....it was funny statement of gligorov saying that the ancient macedonians disappeared and we are just slavs... nations do not disappear they just merge with others changing identity ....in contrary nations grow in number they do not disappear..

    It's a bit far-fetched to believe a strong Macedonian national consciousness has existed since 8th century BC. In reality, the only documentation acknowledging our national consciousness are mostly from 19th century. Personally, I believe we are Dehellenized Paeonian Greeks with sprinklings of Slav migrants. We were Bulgarized with the development of Bulgarian literary schools during the medieval era. This was the precursor for our strong Bulgaro-Macedonian national consciousness in 19th century. Our consciousness remained Bulgarophile until the Bulgarians treated us so badly during WW2 that we finally decided to sever all ties with Bulgaria and form our own nation instead. We would be probably calling ourselves Hellenes today if the Byzantines didn't falter against the Bulgarians and Serbs and Turks.

    It is interesting to note that the country with which they seem to have the most links around, is Serbia (perhaps serbian returnees). Or they don't declare themselves as Macedonians in Bulgaria and Greece...

    One can also note the very likely albanization of Macedonians with these estimations.

    High numbers of Macedonians in Serbia are Yugoslavia leftovers.

    Probably products of intermarriage between Serbs and ethnic Macedonians. Serbs and Macedonians do intermarry sometimes around Kumanovo area. I have no direct Serbian relatives though. All of my relatives are Macedonians. The only Serbian "relative" I have is my first cousin (my father's sister's daughter) intermarrying a Serb man who happens to be a drunk deadbeat... and only had one kid the whole marriage, thank goodness.
