    Default ZAGREB- Capital of Croatia

Zagreb, Croatia is a city with a rich history, dating from Roman times to the present day. The oldest settlement in the urban area of the city is Andautonia, a Roman settlement in the place of today's Šćitarjevo. The name "Zagreb" is mentioned for the first time in 1094 at the founding of the Zagreb diocese of Kaptol, and Zagreb becomes a free royal town in 1242. In 1851 Zagreb had its first mayor, Janko Kamauf, and in 1945 it was made the capital of Croatia. According to the 2001 Croatian census Zagreb has 779,145 inhabitants and is the biggest city of Croatia by area and population.

    Default Zagreb Cathedral

Zagreb Cathedral on Kaptol is the most famous building in Zagreb. It is dedicated to the Assumption of Mary and to kings Saint Stephen and Saint Ladislaus. The cathedral is typically Gothic, as is its sacristy, which is of great architectonic value. Its spires can be seen from many locations in the city.

The building of the cathedral started in the 11th century (1093), although the building was razed to the ground by the Tatars in 1242. At the end of the 15th century, the Ottoman Empire invaded Bosnia and Croatia, triggering the construction of fortification walls around the cathedral. Some of these fortifications are still intact. In the 17th century, a fortified renaissance watchtower was erected on the south side, and was used as a military observation point, because of the Ottoman threat.
In 1880, the cathedral was severely damaged in an earthquake. The main nave collapsed and the tower was damaged beyond repair. The restoration of the cathedral in the neo-gothic style was made by Hermann Bollé, bringing the cathedral to its present form. As part of that restoration, two spires of 108 m (354 ft) height were raised on the western side, both of which are now in the process of being restored during a massive general restoration of the cathedral.
The cathedral is depicted on the reverse of the Croatian 1000 kuna banknote issued in 1993.
The building is, by its horizontal view when facing the portal, 46 meters long in width, 77 metres vertically and 108 metres in height. The cathedral contains a relief of Cardinal Aloysius Stepinac with Christ done by the Croatian sculptor Ivan Meštrović.

    Default British square

A short walk from the main square along Ilica is Britanski trg, where diplomats' wives buy their fruit and vegetables during the week. On Sundays, the stalls are cleared and an attractive bric-a-brac and antique market is laid out, with some 100 stallholders trading goods from first thing in the morning. Paintings, jewellery, old currency, badges, glass bottles, posters, crockery, silver, old farming tools, religious icons, all on display on wooden trestle tables - but few bargains. Gone are the days when you could find a gem going for a song. Still, some beautiful unique pieces will be on offer at prices far less than you'd pay at an Islington design shop.

Even if you don't find anything you want it's a convivial place for a potter around and a coffee afterwards - although finding a spot on a busy Sunday morning may prove difficult.

    Default Bacchus Jazz Bar

Just off the first square as you walk up from the station, the Bacchus Jazz Bar is an ideal place to meet friends, listen to jazz and either have a civilised party evening or get revved up for what's to come. Relaunched as a jazz bar in 2008 after several years on the social margins, the bar exudes a homely Dalmatian feel: the owner is from Split, and there's a fig tree next to the terrace, which is tucked into a passage off the street. Inside you'll find a hodgepodge of wooden furniture - a 1960s-era television and telephone, and wooden-plank floors under a brick ceiling. It's almost always busy, so tables will be at a premium. Wines, mainly Dalmatian, have been chosen to suit the mood. There are cocktails too, but few seem to be paying them much attention. Live poetry or spoken-word on Wednesday nights, jazz jams from Thursday through Saturday.

I need to go there some day... At least on the way to the little Slavonian village where my mother was born.

The lake is the location of the Jarun sports and leisure center, where people can row, paddle, sail, surf, swim, jog, bike, roller skate, and skateboard. Around the lake are many nightclubs and cafes.
