I was christened a catholic but only went to church a few times as a child. It did mean I could not go to the best high school in town which was Church of England.

Effectively, yes. There was excess demand for places at the best church schools and priority would be given to pupils whose parents were church-goers. Of course, some parents would have a miraculous religious conversion a few years before their child was ready for high school. That still goes on.

I just learned today that the modern Russian Orthodox Church was founded in 1945 by 204 KGB agents and the current Russian Orthodox bishop Kirill or Cyril also used to be a KGB agent.
