Eldest daughter of Alfred the Great of England. Became the military leader of the Anglo-Saxons after her husband's death in battle against the Danes in 911. Took command of the fleets to rid the seas of the Viking raiders

One of my ancestors was the last pirate to be hung drawn and quartered and left to rot in an iron cage at the entrance to Chatham dockyard.

So him.....in fact i feel more affintity to him than any other of my ancestors.


My favourite story about British pirates is in a letter at the Greenwich maritime/naval museum on display there.
The letter was written by a British crown diplomat watching the Spansih fleets set sail from Havana harbour and went something to the effect.

"We watched the many ships set sail from Havana in the early morning,laden with gold from their south american colonies and riches on board.
After much firing of canons and flying of flags the ships formed a fleet and headed back to the old worlde to deliver their booty to the king of Spain.
Not long out of the harbour....over the horizon came into view a black dot which as she got closer was identified as a ship flying the British union flag at her jack mast....and upon sight of the Spanish boats quickly changed the flag to the death head crossbones and headed at full sail towards the whole Spanish fleet.

This set the Spanish fleet into such panic that all discipline was lost and at the sight of just one British privateer they headed back into harbour in a complete rout and shambles.

The privateer ship seeing this quickly headed back over the horizon to wait until a better time..........i must admit the sight of this sickened me knowing that the pirate boat was full of the worst dregs that Bristol...London...and Portsmouth had to offer...yet at the same time made me proud to be an Englishman knowing that just one of our ships could put such fright into a whole fleet".



That was the jist of the letter sent by this man to his wife....i cant remember it word for word and to see it you would have to visit the museum there.

If you have an hour or so watch this, I still think Edward Teach the English privateer named Black Beard of "the Queen Ann's Revenge" was the best. I liked his story n style.....

Blackbeard is mine. I visit one of his haunts every autumn on fishing holiday that of Ocracoke Island in the Outer Banks of North Carolina. His flag and name is everywhere on stores and marinas. Howard's Pub on Ocracoke is one of my favourite watering holes and the family that owns it is directly related to Black Beard's Quartermaster. Teach's Lair is where I launch my boat the times I take it down there. I've been known to strike the ensign and fly the Jolly Roger when there, how could you not?
