Vukovar was never a Croatian city. Until the 18th century, Serbs were the absolute majority in Vukovar, and then Austro-Hungary began to inhabit population from the entire Monarchy. The number of Serbs decreased further after the Ustasha massacres of 1941, and continued to decline in the decades after World War II, when the Communist authorities massively inhabited Croats, especially from Dalmatia and Herzegovina.
