The hunt for Red October's point

Why have a group of white people released red balloons into the sky? Most other white people are mystified, if Twitter is anything to go by.



Red October. No, it's not a campaign by the South African Communist Party or even an epic tribute to Tom Clancy's famous novel.

Rather, it's an international campaign by a handful of Afrikaans celebrities and a slightly larger group of conservative and right-wing groups who are bent on the idea that white people – and apparently white people alone – are being murdered and marginalised in South Africa on a massive scale – possibly with some underlying organisation or programme.

This is despite an exhaustive investigation into the oft-quoted issue of "white genocide" by Africa Check that found white people are less likely to be murdered than any other race group in South Africa.

No matter, the campaign wants to fill the skies with red balloons under banners that appropriate a famous communist slogan.

On Thursday October 10, Afrikaans celebrity singers Steve Hofmeyr and Sunette Bridges led a march on the Union Buildings in Pretoria. In Cape Town, on the same day, there was a planned march on the offices of Naspers, the publisher of newspapers such as Beeld and Rapport (which are considered traitorous rags by much of the right wing). In East London, there was to be a gathering at the Heavenly Pancake House, and in Louis Trichardt, the assembly point was a rugby lapa. There were even events planned in Australia, New Zealand and in Chicago at the Trump Tower – wherever the South African white right wing has gathered outside our borders.

At all these events, the intent is to release masses of red balloons (biodegradable ones, in the case of Cape Town) and to protest everything these rightists claim has gone wrong under black rule. Protesters carried signs printed against the colours of the old South African flag.

The campaign was very well-organised, with a comprehensive website carrying inspiring slogans and images.

"Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about the things that matter," begins one paragraph, which ends with the famous quote: "All that is necessary for evil to triumph is for good men to do nothing" albeit unattributed.

Academic Nicky Falkof has pointed out that the language and imagery on the site are an appropriation of the language of liberation and struggle.

"According to Red October, white South Africans are an 'Ethnic Minority' who are experiencing 'inhumane Slaughter and Oppression' [yes, the caps are in the original]. In phrasing that could be lifted directly from the liberation years, the 'people of South Africa' will 'no longer be silent'. 'Other minority groups' [one wonders which ones] will join 'in a show of solidarity' against the government’s failure to enforce our 'rights' and provide all citizens with a 'free, fair and safe country'. Not only that, but they've exhumed poor Edmund Burke's aphorism about evil flourishing while good men do nothing, a somewhat ironic choice for a demographic that spent the worst years of the struggle braaiing by its pools and inspecting its maids for signs of communism."

Hofmeyr responded to Falkof's piece on Twitter in a nonsensical jibe that managed to be both sexist and uninformed.

October 10 was a holiday in the old South Africa, called Kruger Day or Heroes' Day, and was celebrated from 1882 to 1899 and again from 1952 to 1993. It celebrated Paul Kruger’s birthday and the breakaway from British rule.

The present-day campaign has been met with little sympathy however, as many white South Africans distanced themselves from the erroneous assumptions of the movement and along with others on social media handled the issue with humour.

Some tweets referenced a campaign promoted by 5fm DJ Gareth Cliff to stay sober in the month of October:

I wonder if Clancy even wrote that "novel". Clancy was basically a trademark for a business which employed ghostwriters to write not-very-good-but-very-popular military action-adventure pulp.

It's an international campaign by a handful of Afrikaans celebrities and a slightly larger group of conservative and right-wing groups who are bent on the idea that white people – and apparently white people alone – are being murdered and marginalised in South Africa on a massive scale – possibly with some underlying organisation or programme.

That's the (false) claim by the propagandist writer of the article. Even the White Rightwing in SA who aren't renowned for being the most clue'd up lot surely aren't claiming that "they are the only ones being murdered and marginalised."

However, their struggle is for their own people and culture, not that of other racial and cultural groups in SA.

Crime affects everybody in South Africa but the FACTS are that most violent criminals are BLACK. BLACKS are responsible for 99.9% of violent crime on South Africans of all ethnic backgrounds.

This is despite an exhaustive investigation into the oft-quoted issue of "white genocide" by Africa Check that found white people are less likely to be murdered than any other race group in South Africa.

Meaningless "investigation" by morons. Whites are probably less than 10% of the total population. Obviously they are "less likely to be murdered". There are less of them around to murder by South Africa's Legions of BLACK murderers.

I just watched this on the news. Steve Hofmeyr should stick to making music.

I can imagine how cheesy and stupid-as-fuck the whole thing must look... and it probably is. But just because many of them are a bit thick or not exactly world-wise doesn't mean they're wrong.

There is a violence problem in SA and whilst it's true that it affects everybody I don't think that it's wrong to suspect that there is also a racial and cultural undercurrent to many of those murders, particularly in farming and rural areas. It's not fantasy, it's reality for many of these folks and they have good reason to feel marginalised and threatened.

Those libtard idiots making fun and being demeaning don't help.... they live in gated and patrolled upper-middleclass neighbourhoods protected by legions of private security contractors. They have priviliged jobs (which strangely they aren't volunteering to give to the "more needy Africans" whom they claim to love so much, their children are in expensive private schools, they've practically got reserved positions at the Ivy League Clubs & Universities etc. It's so easy to be a smartass when you're not the one having your throat slit by the "victims of Apartheid". (Which ended almost 20 years ago in 1994)

The problem for the Afrikaners are that there's a lack of leadership amongst the Rightwing & Conservative circles. The ones with 1/2 a braincell between them are paid off to keep the rest quiet and to participate in the joke known as "the Democratic Process". Basically the same as how Gerry Adams, McGuinness & Co took the money to enrich themselves and to go play politics and sell out the IRA in Northern Ireland.

The reality is that multikult just doesn't work unless people WANT to participate in it and forge some kind of globalised culture amongst themselves. Many people don't want this, they're not compatible with it and it's sinister to force it on them against their will.

A White Rightwing Conservative type Bantustan or "Homeland" in SA would go a long way towards solving and drawing a line under many of these issues. The Apartheid Era NP Government stabbed those folks in the back by not even making a token attempt to establish such an arrangement and left Whitey with an ongoing nightmare which could and should have been avoided.

Red October unrepentant about race-genocide claims

Though painted as a demonstration for minority rights, Red October's march to Pretoria's Union Buildings focused on black-on-white crime.



There were old South African flags, kudu-wors rolls, people in zombie make-up and posters featuring photos of dead farmers when the Red October group marched on the Union Buildings in Pretoria on Thursday – but there were also calls for tolerance and warnings against hate speech and racism.

The almost universally white Afrikaner group, organised by Afrikaans singer Sunette Bridges, delivered a memorandum calling for an end to black-on-white violence and what it termed reverse racial discrimination in education and employment.

"We are not denying that they [other races] are being murdered, but they are not being murdered by white people," said Bridges when asked why the focus was on white – especially farm – murders. "And if they were murdered by white people, the international community would have an absolute freak-out."

The group and its organisers came under fire from other Afrikaans-speaking constituencies for appropriating a traditionally communist slogan for its name on what in previous years had been celebrated as Kruger Day, the birthday of Boer resistance leader Paul Kruger.

But although the Vierkleur and old South African flags (both strongly associated with the far-right wing) were common among the 400-odd marchers in Pretoria, organisers said they were fighting for the rights of minorities, not protesting against black rule.

"Everyone is welcome here," said Afrikaans singer Steve Hofmeyr, who acted as a celebrity drawcard for the event. "We march to prove that there are South Africans left who won't acclimatise to the substandard."

Complaints include the state of public services such as healthcare and education.

Despite arguments that the event was intended to advance minority rights in general, the focus was very much on the rape and murder of white people by black people, something organisers did not shy away from characterising as genocide.

Hofmeyr, who has been called out for using dubious statistics to back up such claims, was unrepentant about saying white people faced an exaggerated threat.

"Immaterial of the statistics, we are not used to this mortality rate, we are not used to being raped in these numbers," he said.

Crime affects everyone in South Africa, he told the crowd, but Afrikaners had the right to count their own dead.

"If we say all deaths should be counted, why do we count the rhinos and not count all dead animals?"
