Olympic opening ceremony as "leftie multi-cultural crap"

A Conservative MP forced to apologise after attending a reportedly Nazi-themed stag party appeared to describe the Olympic opening ceremony as "leftie multi-cultural crap", sparking criticism.

The comments, claiming the ceremony was more left wing than that which opened the 2008 Beijing games in Communist China, appeared in a Twitter account purporting to be that of Aidan Burley, the Tory MP for Cannock Chase, while the ceremony in Stratford was taking place.

After the opening section, which showcased British history, including the creation of the NHS and the Jarrow march, a 1936 protest against unemployment in the North East, two tweets were posted from @AidanBurleyMP, saying: "The most leftie opening ceremony I have ever seen - more than Beijing, the capital of a communist state! Welfare tribute next?"

A second tweet read: "Thank God the athletes have arrived! Now we can move on from leftie multi-cultural crap. Bring back red arrows (sic), Shakespeare and the Stones!"

Downing Street distanced itself from the comments, with a senior source saying: "We do not agree with him."

The tweets, widely repeated, caused an avalanche of criticism on the social networking site including from a fellow Conservative, Croydon MP Gavin Barwell. "@AidanBurleyMP with respect, us Londoners are rather proud of the diversity of our city #nothingleftwingaboutit," he tweeted in reply.

Mr Burley lost his job as a parliamentary private secretary after media reports of the party on December 3 last year in a restaurant in the French Alpine resort of Val Thorens, at which one guest is alleged to have dressed in an SS uniform and others are said to have chanted Nazi slogans.

The Cannock Chase MP has repeatedly apologised for being present at the event, but said in December: "I do not believe I have broken any French law and have distanced myself from the behaviour of other people on the stag."

A later tweet from the account said the previous comments had been "misunderstood". "Seems my tweet has been misunderstood. I was talking about the way it was handled in the show, not multiculturalism itself," it said.

A Conservative Party spokesman could not immediately confirm the account belonged to the MP, but added: "I would echo David Cameron's words from earlier that this is a great showcase to show what Britain is all about."

The morris men say they feel angry and betrayed by ceremony organisers who want to present a more contemporary image of Britain to the worldwide TV audience of up to four billion.

Barry Goodman, president of the Morris Federation, said: ‘The feeling among morris dancers is fury.

‘It’s appalling. Those running the Olympics don’t want to be involved in morris dance. Although making encouraging noises, there has been no word from Olympic organisers inviting morris teams to take part.

‘There are some very fine young teams whose talent and spectacle would amaze any audience, particularly a worldwide TV one. The opening ceremonies should celebrate the diversity of cultures in this wonderfully multicultural country of ours – but a place should be reserved for our national dance.’

The Olympics have traditionally been an opportunity for the host nation to showcase its national culture, with the opening ceremony of the Beijing Games featuring traditional dragon dancers.

But Britain’s Olympics chiefs seem to regard morris dancing as a joke. When Sebastian Coe was asked in 2008 what London’s opening ceremony could possibly offer to compete with the awesome spectacle in Beijing, he quipped: ‘Five thousand morris dancers.’

The opening ceremony will be masterminded by Danny Boyle, director of Slumdog Millionaire and Trainspotting. He has said he wants to ‘re-think’ tradition using British pop and rock culture and ‘bits of British films’.

When asked by The Mail on Sunday whether morris dances would be included in the ceremony, an Olympics spokesman simply laughed.
He added: ‘The artistic content of the ceremony is decided by the artistic director. That’s why we have taken on an Oscar-winning director who is one of the UK’s leading creatives. We will talk about some of the themes of the ceremony next year.’

Morris dancing began in England about 600 years ago, though its exact origins are surrounded in mystery.
