I would say your assessment is valid in its own right, but I'm a pragmatist by nature... Respect is a two way street... If one's dogmatic ideals holds virtue over understanding and ideas that deviate from said religious ideals; what worth would one be to that person besides their set-minded idealism? If a person from another tribe favors something else than your own; they already decided their own path away from the tribe. Thus, they are no longer apart of it when they heavily invested their time in something that is not culturally fluid as their own. Which is where the roadblocks start until the breaking point.

It takes two people to make it worthwhile in the end, but such divisions in mindset is the spark to the powder keg that undoes all that hard work and commitment to nothing.

Religion is internalized differently by each individual. How they see religion and utilize it is what matters most. When a person preaches tolerance that should espouse "open-mindedness" , but quickly deviate from their espoused moral teachings by slandering non-believers as "heathens" with venomous malice and hatred; what "tolerance" is there to understand?

Religion is human derived via thought and organization that is susceptible to biases and corruption that can deviate from its teachings that becomes dichotomous. Whereas say science is grounded in empiricism in the application in what is valid and what is not. If an existing theory is disproved; the existing theory is revised that bridges with other theories in as a grounded, collective explanation. Nevertheless, it is susceptible to narrow-mindedness when people deviate from the norm when it becomes narrow-minded and elitist.

Which is why I'm inclined to believe that religious and cultural/ethnic lines need to be similar in order for it to work. Narrow-minded this outlook may be perhaps, but what comes with disappointment is sagacious experiences to better one's wisdom.

On pragmatism. It is pragmatic, say, for a woman of your tribe to only expect her own tribesmen to have an invested interest in her well-being. Do you think if she were to flee to a foreign tribe due to her beliefs, they would honor her like they honor their own tribeswomen? No. They look out for their own, so you should too.

On choosing a foreign path. There are many lanes on the road, and our tribe is one of them. I may choose a foreign vehicle to transport me on this lane, but I don’t want to change lanes. I don’t trust the quality of other lanes, or their drivers, and their vehicles are in disrepair. And switching lanes would be hazardous. Why would you want that for one of your own?

On divisions in mindset. Communication, honesty, communication, consideration, and communication. This is all you need to overcome differences. But not everyone can, and in fact I would venture to say most people can’t. Because when two people are different they are hesitant to be fully communicative, for various reasons, but mostly stemming from being insecure and uncomfortable around the other person. If people are from the same tribe/ethnicity and can speak the same native language, I do not think communication and understanding will be difficult.

On religion vs. science. These are not mutually exclusive. There is no problem with science, or religion, only with humans and how they choose to wield their scientific and/or religious knowledge. We as a species have very little knowledge in both realms, yet, we think we know it all and make endless attempts to squash others with what little we know. Neither religion nor science can be blamed for the predatory instincts of mankind.
