Here is what I have read on Bulgarians. That's from a French traveller of the 19th century, he observed the local populations and was in contact with them.

In the XIXth c. the French were openly supporting Serbia against the Bulgarians.

Not true, westerners were shared between philhellenes and philoslavs, but nobody cared about Bulgaria, except perhaps that Serbia sent her from time to time some support (I admit not enough), but it was primarily the fault of the Bulgarians if they stayed so long under Ottoman rule, because you were the most passive. Besides, this French traveller, on the whole is anti-Russian than anything else.
