It's a shame the Swedish Empire didn't last a bit longer, once they lost Finland they lost their lebensraum. I suppose Lappland was a consolation price.

I've always thought of Lapland as some wilderness which Sweden and Norway expanded into. I suppose it's a sort of romantic image comparable to the Russian conquest of Siberia or the settlement of Canada and America, but over a much longer period.
I wonder if there's much information available on the Swedish and Norwegian encroachment into Lapland? There doesn't seem to be much in English anyway.
