There is no difference between "manic depression" and "bipolar disorder". They are one and the same thing.
The term "manic depression" was coined by Emil Kraeplin in the early 1900's.
There was some confusion around the term which is why it has been changed in the 1980's.
The illness consists of episodes of mania and depression. The term "manic depression" confuses many people because they think that the word "manic" is a description of the depression, like extreme depression.
The new term of "bipolar mood disorder" is more descriptive and leads to less confusion because it emphases the two poles of the illness: very high and very low.
Some older doctors still use the term "manic depression" but it has been phased out and replaced by the newer term.
