Intelligence - Result of Sexual or Natural selection?

I want in this thread to discuss Intelligence, and how it arose.

I personally believe it is mainly the result of sexual selection. Example of that would be males trying to impress on females, and thats probably how culture evolved(music/dance etc).

Ancient peoples were obviously influenced by flashy displays of power and sleights of hand, but the probability of such intelligent men to remain aloof and abstain from sex was also very high.

Both. But if I had to choose, I'd say natural selection. The very act of sex is antithesis of intelligence, in my mind. And in hypersexualized cultures you do not find much intelligence on display.

Sexual selection has very little to do with intelligence. The concept of sexual selection is based on physical appearance and the development of features that do not not help the individual to survive but enhances his reproductive success. Features like larger body, larger genitalia, in some species coloration etc.

Intelligence is not sex driven, there were other factors that triggered the evolution of intellect.

There two types of Intelligence that were sexually selected:
- Ability to achieve social status, what requires intelligence. We can call it social intelligence;
- Ability to satisfy biological needs within a certain natural environment and overcome elements of nature. The very intelligence that is carved by natural selection and then reinforced by sexual selection.

Sure, sexual selection in humans operates on intelligence (at least as far as I can tell). But it also operates on many other factors too. Also, measuring intelligence isn't all that easy: one person may think I'm a hideously intelligent guy, but another may think I'm a complete idiot.

Sexual selection is selectivity in mate choice, it can be considered a subset of natural selection.
