Bulgarian Roma Leader says Census Count is Low

The Roma population in Bulgaria is significantly higher than the figures released last week by the National Statistics Institute, NSI, according to Bulgarian Evroroma party leader Tsvetelin Kanchev.
Novinite ( Sofia News Agency )

The NSI estimated the number of Bulgarian Roma at 325,000-343,000. Citing CIA data, Kanchev put the true number at 870,000.

The discrepancy comes from confusing questions about ethnicity and religion in the February census, Kanchev said in an interview with bTV.

"In the Roma language, a Bulgarian equals Christian, while Turk and Muslim is the same thing," he said. "In addition, some Roma had been threatened with losing their social welfare money if they identified themselves as Roma. And some mayors from the ethnic Turkish party Movement for Rights and Freedoms, DPS, listed Roma as Turks."

The leader of the nationalist VMRO party, Krasimir Karakachanov, also took part in the discussion, and agreed with Kanchev. Karakachanov said that over 700,000 people left the question about ethnicity blank on their census form, while another 50,000 said they did not know their ethnicity.

Karakachanov added that illiteracy among Roma also contributed to the problem.

Kanchev suggested that a good way to get an accurate count would be to have local mayors submit the number of Roma in their municipalities.

Meanwhile, "Erevan," the leading Armenian newspaper in Bulgaria, also questioned the census results, which show 6,500 Armenians living in the country. According to the publication, there are well over 10,000 Armenians in Bulgaria.

    Great source.

    A Roma leader and Karakacanov

Half of the roma traditionally declare to be bulgarians or turks.
Bulgaria needs to assimilate the rest.

There are bad effects from it but still...

Bulgaria hasnt done enough in terms of assimilation.
    Look at Greece.

But if you see on the other side, all other minorities in Bulgaria are brought to the edge of extinction.

Yes, ethnic Macedonians have dropped in number over the years. BG assimilation policies have been successful here.

If you're talking about the drunken pensioners from Blagoevgrad then I dont know how 50 people can become an minority...The organization of Bulgaria's vietnamese has more members...
Btw you do know that the money coming from the asutralian macedonist diaspora who are their sponsor is wasted for beer, right?

    You should look into that.

Bulgaria needed assimilation campaigns towards groups like the turks not towards the so called macedonians.

Even if ethnic macedonians existed in Bulgaria they will be assimilated in no time and you dont need any campaigns for that.

It is the law of nature that says that if a smaller group is living among a bigger group and they both share the same values it is the smaller group that will be assimilated.

Bulgarians and macedonians share the same names,surnames,language,history,religion...so assimilation is bound to happen.

Here is an example, look at this girl in the report...she is already assimilated.

Macedonians do exist and you know it. Let's stick to the large Roma minority though.

I know it,but not the ethnic kind.

Roma are 4% of the population and decreasing.
Western Europe is full of them.

You should stick to the fact that the muslim population in Macedonia is nearing 40% of the total with the capacity to become the majority by the end of this decade.

In Bulgaria there are no ethnic minorities and that where everything ends.
