Bulgarian Roma Leader says Census Count is Low
The Roma population in Bulgaria is significantly higher than the figures released last week by the National Statistics Institute, NSI, according to Bulgarian Evroroma party leader Tsvetelin Kanchev.
Novinite ( Sofia News Agency )
The NSI estimated the number of Bulgarian Roma at 325,000-343,000. Citing CIA data, Kanchev put the true number at 870,000.
The discrepancy comes from confusing questions about ethnicity and religion in the February census, Kanchev said in an interview with bTV.
"In the Roma language, a Bulgarian equals Christian, while Turk and Muslim is the same thing," he said. "In addition, some Roma had been threatened with losing their social welfare money if they identified themselves as Roma. And some mayors from the ethnic Turkish party Movement for Rights and Freedoms, DPS, listed Roma as Turks."
The leader of the nationalist VMRO party, Krasimir Karakachanov, also took part in the discussion, and agreed with Kanchev. Karakachanov said that over 700,000 people left the question about ethnicity blank on their census form, while another 50,000 said they did not know their ethnicity.
Karakachanov added that illiteracy among Roma also contributed to the problem.
Kanchev suggested that a good way to get an accurate count would be to have local mayors submit the number of Roma in their municipalities.
Meanwhile, "Erevan," the leading Armenian newspaper in Bulgaria, also questioned the census results, which show 6,500 Armenians living in the country. According to the publication, there are well over 10,000 Armenians in Bulgaria.
