I love this and everything that inspired it-- Stravinsky wrote this around World War One and was struggling to cope with the fact that, no, the advances brought by industrialization were not humanity's savior. In fact, they allowed for greater misery and destruction than ever before. The third movement sounds like tiptoeing through an apocalyptic assault of meteors, fanatically repeating "praise God, praise God..." as if it would help. The pulse of this piece of music really makes the point that the world will happen on God's timing, and you don't have to like it!

Don't forget that Stravinsky wrote two major theater works based on the Faustian idea of selling one soul to the devil, "The Soldier's Tale" and "The Rake's Progress".

He also contributed the tower of Babel section of the "Genesis Suite" that several composers contributed to during World War II. The whole thing is worth a listen.
Stravinsky, Schoenberg and Milhaud alll coming together for one moment in History.

Is this Brendel's early cycle he made for Vox in dismal sound and amazing playing?

I have it as part of one of Brilliant's "Complete" Beethoven boxes. They issued different ones since then. Good stuff...
