    Default European medieval music and poetry

    "Lo ferm voler qu'el cor m'intra", considered to be one of the first known sestinas created by the troubadeur Arnaut Daniel. Arnaut Daniel de Riberac (today Arnaut Danièl) was an Occitan troubadour of the 12th century, praised by Dante as "il miglior fabbro" (the best craftsman/creator, literally "the best smith") and called "Grand Master of Love" by Petrarch. In the 20th century he was lauded by Ezra Pound as the greatest poet to have ever lived in his work The Spirit of Romance (1910).

    "Schiarazula Marazula" (''Scjaraçule maraçule'' in furlan language)is a traditional fòrlan song, from Friuli (north-eastern Italy), originated in the middle ages as popular peasant song.
    In the late 1500, forlan-emilian musician Gjorgi Mayner (also know with the italianized name Giorgio Mainero), wrote a lyric for the son in furlan language:

    ''Scjaraçule maraçule,
    la lusigne, la cracule,
    la piciule si niçiule,
    di polvar a si tacule;
    O scjaraçule maraçule,
    cu la ruçule e la cocule,
    la fantate jè une trapule,
    il fantat un trapolon.
    ''

    I find it amazing to understand these trouvadour songs almost in their entirety, despite the centuries and Catalan having evolved way too far from Occitan to be the same language any more.

    One of my all-time favourites of these medieval poems is Can vei la lauzeta mover. This performance by Maria Laffitte is great.

    This is amazing! I can understand a lot of trobadours too...not all, but many parts.

    Is interesting see how the ghirunda (the Viola de roda) was a pan southern and western European instrument during Middle Ages and Renaissance.

    ''Vidorle'', also know as ''Vidourle'', was a crusader song, popular among the ''coscricts de Lengadòc''; the term ''Vidurle'' is derived from the namesake languedocian river.

    ''Greensleeves'', probabily originally named ''Greensleaves'', was written by King Henry VIII of England, according to the tradition.

    Ich have loved al this yer
    That Y may love na more;
