Madam Blavatsky was really nothing more than a charlatan trying to import Hindu style guru godmen theology into the west. She created a religious society and profited from it. Kind of exactly the same thing as L. Ron Hubbard except much less successful. Her main shtick was to attract people with money (celebrities, rich socialites, etc.) who were interested in occult stuff and hold seances for them, and feed them her 'doctrine'. She received a lot of her money that way.

Blavatsky also personally mocked Spiritualism and "table-tappers", but she was happy to do exactly this herself when asked, like a performing parlour entertainer. She claimed a lot her knowledge was "channeled", although she was a trust fund baby who didn't have to work and had unlimited free time to travel and read any kind of esoteric texts she wanted. She claimed to be a virgin all her life when she was known to have married, I have no idea why she was so adamant about lying about this other than possibly it conflicted with some of her views on psychic powers (virginity holds power in many occult beliefs). She claimed that she had disguised herself as a man to fight in the Battle of Mentana, where she was left for dead. But she supposedly used her powers to fight her way back to life. However, she could not adequately explain why she, a Russian living in America, would want to involve herself in an Italian-French conflict in Rome. Soon, she let this story go.
