Hmm, most likely your grandparents was Gagauz because most members of the Istanbul Greek church from eastern Thrace was Gagauz christian Turks. There was also Bulgarians in eastern Thrace who were also members of Istanbul church. Obviously these people were intermarrying within each other and thats exactly why your grandparents was speaking Turkish and a bit Bulgarian.

I also don't believe that they were able to speak Greek at all. They were speaking pure Turkish and had Turkish liturgy in churches. The knowledge of Greekish Rum tongue among the Bulgars and Gagauz of Thrace was NONEXISTENT. They couldn't even count from 1 to 10 in Greek language.

So, you my friend, a perfect example of a grecoman (!!!)

Well, you had the Constantinopolitan Patriarchate on your side, which was a mighty organisation. That surely helped a lot. Besides, Greek was the language of education, prestige, commerce, science, etc. before the nationalist movements in the 19th c. If it wasn't for the megali idea, which aim was to transform the old Eastern Orthodox Roman identity to a modern Greek one, we might still have been one folk.

Oh, poor dispossessed Onur... Gagauz were living only in North EAstern Bulgaria. The Southern Black Sea coast was purely Greek, they were Hellenophone.

And never ever was the Turkish language used in church. Some of the Gagauz around Varna and Dobrich were Grecomans precisely because of their Patriarchist affiliation and the fact that they used Greek in their churches.

Laugh as you like my friend. I know some hard truths might cause hysteria.

Only the muslim Turks, Pomaks, Gagauz and christian Bulgarians lived in Thrace throughout many centuries in the past. The Greek population in there was no more than 10%, even less than the jews of Thrace. That 10% mostly consisted of tradesmen and their families.

I have ancestors from Odrin as well. They came to Bulgaria as refugees in 1913. Some members of this particular family were Patriarchists, though, and opted to go to Greece instead of Bulgaria. I might have some Greek cousins.
    Perhaps we are related
I have second cousins in Bulgaria but this is another Story

The old ethnographic maps before the population exchange shows ~50% and more Greek in Eastern Thrace.

    Green - Bulgarians
    Brown - Greeks
    Orange - Turks

Map takes into account only home language, not church affiliation.
