The old Japanese of today were the guys that survived Guadalcanal, Tarawa, Peleliu, Okinawa, Iwo Jima etc. and who went back to work the day the war was over, putting in their strength, their fanaticism, their work ethic, sacrificing family, their own lives and everything they had to rebuild their country. Twelve hours, sixteen hours a day. For them they had lost the war but a new war was taking place: this time an economic war and one can say they thrashed the U.S.A completely and utterly in that war. Because those polite salarymen in their suits were effectively samurai behind desks. They are not Japan's self-absorbed generation of today (their post-1985 version of our baby boomers): they were hardcore.
