Too many shi's... sha shi sho shu.. goes like that
    (not really ching chong..)
I burst my Chinese friends to laughters with my pronunciation skills ,I have no idea what I am saying (I hope not so awkward things lol) Actually it is a nice, but quite discouraging language ,needs good listenings skills.
Meaning of word changes a lot according to stress on particular syllable ,not only difficult characters..If I start now I can be a Chinese Speaking grandma with no reading skills ..

It sounds weird, I hear a lot of ching, chang, tung, yang and so on

ps while you say in your country ''it sounds Greek to me'', we say in Greece ''it sounds Chinese to me'' which speaks volumes of how funny it sounds to our ears

Sounds interesting. I notice how in chinese there is a lot more 'sh', and in Japanese a lot more 'k'. I find Japanese much easier and more pleasant to listen too, Chinese is more of a struggle.

Japanese and Korean are by far my favourite East Asian languages to listen to, Chinese not so much.

I like Mandarin more, overall. My roommate speaks both Mandarin and Cantonese with his parents, over Skype, so I hear it every few days, due to that or if he shows me news videos in Chinese.

A few differences I noticed over the months:

Mandarin has more of an "errr" sound, and is less discrete, but overall nicer on my ears. Cantonese seems to go "up and down and up and down."
