The number of the Oghuz tribes varied in time. During the second half of the 11th century there were 22 main Oghuz tribes according to Mahmud of Kashgar, but Rashid-al-Din listed 24 Oghuz tribes at the beginning of the 14th century.

According to the Ottoman tax archives, in a study conducted by Prof Dr Yusuf Halacoglu, 1.140.000 nomadic Turkmen tents/households/families were recorded. (16th - 17th centuries)
