This film centers on a professional baseball player who is also a reserve officer in the U.S. Air Force. He had been a B-29 pilot during the Pacific War. He is called back to active duty and becomes the pilot / aircraft commander of a B-36 Peacemaker, which was USAF's primary strategic nuclear bomber before the B-52.

According to Wikipedia, the B-36 is the largest mass-produced piston-engined aircraft ever built. To get an idea of its size, consider the length a playing field used for American football, which is 300 feet (about 91 meters). The length of the wingspan of a B-36 was 230 feet (about 70 meters). Jet engines were added during its service life for extra speed.

The video above is a clip from the film, and it follows a B-36 from engine startup through takeoff. James Stewart plays the officer called back to active duty (the officer carrying a duffel bag at the beginning of the video), and he will accompany the plane's crew on a training flight to learn more about the plane.

The above video is an excerpt from a CBS News broadcast, which summarizes the historical context for the movie. It should be noted that the airliner in the movie was not a 737 MAX, which began service in May, 2017, before the fleet was grounded. The 737 in the film was an earlier version built in 1968.

The movie is a based upon an incident that occurred on April 28, 1988. Aloha Airlines Flight 243 was making a regularly scheduled flight to the Hawaiian island of Maui; while it was in the air, a large section of the cabin roof tore away due to structural fatigue. Due to the outstanding performance of the pilots (Pilot Robert Schornstheimer, and Co-pilot Madeline "Mimi" Tompkins), and particularly to 'luck', the aircraft made a safe landing at Maui.
