The effort in recreating battles etc is laudable, but the dialogue throughout is lame/corny, such that even after 4.5 hrs it feels like an empty film.
One of the only bits I remember is when Jeff Daniels and this Irish character are sitting by a tree discussing the war/slavery, for how cringeworthy it is.

I'm with you in that I can't say I have a favourite, but there's plenty I think are great.
The movie mentioned above, Breaker Morant is a great Australian film surrounding the Boer War. Paths of Glory (1957) and All Quiet on the Western Front (1979) are brilliant, as is Waterloo (1970), one of the most realistic and painstaking recreations of a battle. Stalingrad (1993), a German film, is excellent but grim. I've loved Zulu (1964) since I was a kid, and Zulu Dawn (1979) is great too. The Hunt for Red October is one of my favourite movies full stop, if you can count it as a War film. Master and Commander also one of my all-time favourite films. Two more recent ones I liked a lot were Hacksaw Ridge and Lone Survivor. Props as well to Black Hawk Down and The Thin Red Line for their awesome action scenes.

Imo, it's a very good movie to watch in a cinema that makes you feel like you live the war or play in a video-game.
However, very lame to watch it from home in average quality and try to draw conclusions.
The most dissapointing and overrated for me was Dunkirk.
Hacksaw Ridge (mentioned by Creoda) and Letters from Iwo Jima are far better imo, and obv the older stuff (Kubrick, Kurosawa, etc).
