What's the scoop with a Matryoshka? If it's produced in Russia traditionally, not necessarily 'invented' (this part we can speculate if you wish to and fight tooth and nail over it if it makes you happy) we can say it's a part of Russian culture, no doubts about it.

    Cheers!

It's not fake it's what's called an "invented tradition" very similar to the Scottish Tartan which was introduced only a few centuries ago by Flemish weavers.

I'd say that in this case the dolls showcase Russian traditional crafts and styles even if the actual concept was borrowed recently.
    Spoiler!

Oh, c'mon. You didn't get my point.

If it's produced in Russia traditionally ... we can say it's a part of Russian culture
    Yes, you are right.
But I meant it is not the traditional FOLK CULTURE, but a relatively new one.

Give me a precise definition of a traditional folk culture and we'll take it from there.

Now I see my fault, it's indeed an "invented tradition" as Anglojew has said.
As for a traditional folk culture's definition it is actually a part of folklore.

For example fairy tales are a part of a folk culture (folklore), but a novel bestseller from the 19th century is not a folklore (but such bestseller may become a classical one).

So what japanese invented matroshkas?? Therefor russians invented japanese anime style of characters.

its really the truth, the first cartoon with animelike character proportions was the russian film the snow queen. Of course the style is not for every character just for the childrens but if anything in the past looked like animes like in these days then it was this film released in 1957. The noses, the eyes the small faces this is true anime made in Russia. Espaciallay the noses are very typical for animes of this day.

All what japanese had at the time was this and that which came all later since the snow queen came in 1957. And they all look nothing like animes of these days. The only animated japanese cartoon who came before was Momotaro which only had animals and its black and white.

now lets see what the great anime guru miyazaki has to say about this according to wikipedia.
Hayao Miyazaki has stated that this film is one of his inspirations to work in animation. When he started his career, Miyazaki had a rough start and was thinking of leaving animation already. When he saw The Snow Queen, he admired it and continued working in anime. In September 2007, it was announced that Studio Ghibli will be distributing this film through their Ghibli Museum Library label and it was released in December 2007 (in the original Russian audio with Japanese subtitles).
hmm why is that?? Maybe because he realized that if russians made such a great anime in the 50s he should be ashamed of him self to make nothing out of his career. Actually if you look at the story of snow queen which was written by danish christian anderson it is just like the typical miyazaki film. Strong female characters, no one dies at the end all are good and so on.

What evidence is there that the Balalayka is not Russian, but an invented tradition?

    Русская народная музыка

Я честно не знаю где еще так поют и играют.

И вот еще, инструмент распространенный, но музыка чисто Русская

А матрешки на Руси еще до христианства были, в них смысл есть если сделаны правильно.
