Why do we call the Italians 'swarthy'?

The Roman Empire still mainly covered Southern Europe and the Med. By "Romans" I clearly didn't mean "Romans from the northernmost provinces". The fact of the matter is that it's cool through much of the year, it may not be as cold as some other parts of Europe but then it's not a competition about which country is the coldest, more of a casual observation that bare feet in sandals would be cold in Britannia.

Speaking of which you Brits are funny. A while ago, it was Autumn, I was in England and it was quite cold especially at night however you could see all these English chaps going around in short sleeves. The funny thing is, they were so obviously suffering cold like dogs you could clearly see it, hands in their pockets and goosebumps... What's the matter, is wearing a jacket not manly enough in Britain?

Yeah, it's a test of endurance. There's always some guys that take it too far and go around in shorts and a t-shirt when it's snowing though - they're not even rare, there's quite a few of them around!
