Default Churches and Monasteries in the Republic of Macedonia

I will begin this thread with the Saint Panteleimon Monastery, located on Plaošnik, in Ohrid. This Monastery is probably the most iconic landmark in Macedonia, the equivalent to the Eiffel tower to the French.

The Monastery was built during the reign of Boris I of Bulgaria, Knyaz (prince) of the first Bulgarian empire, and was supposedly built by Saint Clement of Ohrid, disciple of Saint Cyril and Saint Methodius. This monastery was built on top of an even older church from the 4th century AD.

Originally, it was built as a university to teach the Glagolitic alphabet used to translate the Bible into Old Church Slavonic.

In the 15th century, the monastery was converted into a Mosque by the Ottomans, but restored back to a monastery later on.

It is still the site of major archaeological excavations.

Totally amazing!!! It makes me realy proud because in those very walls it was created the first written slavic culture which influenced Eastern Europe! Ohrid is one of the most beautiful cities and especially precious for all Bulgarians!

Next is the Church of St. John at Kaneo. (Свети Јован Богослов Канео), (Свети Йоан Богослов Канео)

Located just meters from Saint Panteleimon Monastery, overlooking the beautiful lake Ohrid, is the Church of St. John. Built in the 13th century and dedicated to John the Theologian.

Next is the Monastery of Saint Naum. Built in 905 by Saint Naum of Ohrid (Свети Наум Охридски) who was a medieval Bulgarian scholar and missionary.

    Nice topic Vojnik!

I'm not going to answer/debunk Ioan's twisted reply (post No.2), l'll just ignore it! I'm a fan of religious monuments, it doesn't matter where they came from or who built them, it was built for the people to serve GOD!

I agree with some of what you said. We should foremost thank those people for their contribution and dedication to the Slavic and Eastern Orthodox world. But it's also important to remember who these people that built these significant places were by ethnicity and which kingdom they belonged to.
