I've lately wondered what Europe would have been like in an alternative reality in which a wall was built, a "Great Wall of Europe," if you will, to protect Europe from Barbarian invasions from Asia.
I think the best and easiest place for this would have been between the Urals and Caspian Sea?
I see two possible scenarios in which this could have happened. The first if Rome had expanded north and east. The second later perhaps involving a Catholic-Orthodox alliance. I think that it may have been a "Game of Thrones" arrangement with all European countries sending a contingent of soldiers to man the wall or perhaps a Knightly order could have arisen to protect the border.
What are your thoughts? How would Europe be different now if there had been no Hunish, Avar, Mongolian invasions? Would Europe have ever united to do this?
