No doubt Twistedmind knows more about ex-Yugos, but for a foreign point of view, Croatia is more close to Hungary and Czechia. All in all to Central Europe.
Geopolitically and mentally, to the former Austrian Empire.

Why rolleyes?
You asked me "Do Croats feel closer to Slovenes or Serbs?". I said that overall they feel closer to Slovenes (Catholics, western alphabet, neighbors and shared history) than with Serbs implying that a lot of it has to do because of relations in the last century. Perhaps if one would be objective there would be more similarities between Serbs and Croats but that is how they feel.
I than said that people are more and more turning to Serbia and are influenced with their Balkan inspired music, cinema...
Do not know about Slovakia but as I have said there are some feelings towards Slovenia and Poland too since modern Croats partially have origins from there and they are aware of that to some degree, its Catholic country...
So to sum it up if someone wants to be objective there are perhaps more ties between Serbia and Croatia overall than with other Slavic Catholic countries but I am just saying how Croats feel about one another which is also an important factor.

Half of it is Balkan, the other half is not. Balkans are a geographic term.

In my opinion of course it does, though there's a quote:
"We in Slovenia are especially sensitive when it comes to this; For us in Slovenia, the Balkans begin here in Croatia. Because during the period of the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy we were the Austrian part of it, we were in Middle Europe, in the midst of civilizaition, while Croatia (on the other hand) would be the Balkans. For Croats, the Balkans begins with Bosnia and Serbia, since the Croats are catholics, they're Europe. For Serbians, the Balkans are Albanians, Kosovo and downward - The Serbs are the last fortress, defense of Europe."
