Brazilian is more easily understood by foreigners, and usually prefered, even by some Portuguese.
Portuguese understand most Brazilians pretty good, but the reverse is not so true.
Sometimes when I speak to Brazilians here they tell me to speak slower because I speak "muito fechado" (too closed)

Eça de Queiróz, a portuguese writer from the XIX century used to refer to Brazilian Portuguese, as "Portuguese with sugar"
you guys do not pronounce the vowels, speak very fast!

I think we speak at the normal rhythm of the Language.
Most vowels are indeed pronounced, perhaps missed by the untrained ear.

Most common mistakes from 10 year olds from my hometown, it was true 20 years ago and it's still true nowadays, many kids (and old people) pronounce these words in such manner, specially outside city center:

Veja em baixo uma pequena lista de grafias registadas, em composições de alunos – do quinto ano de escolaridade obrigatória – do concelho de Viseu (Bento, 1991) :

    «pregunta» (pergunta)
    «belhetes» (bilhetes)
    «intravam» (entravam)
    «dezer» (dizer)
    «luvou-o» (levou-o)
    «ajuntaram-se» (juntaram-se)
    «pana» (pena)
    «munta» (muita)
    «questume» (costume)
    «pracurou» (procurou)
    «ferioso» (furioso)
    «volso» (bolso)
    «disse-le» (disse-lhe)

Slight off-topic, Portuguese/Spanish, both in their european accents, it doesn't sound as different as some people think it does.

I've heard the mongrels from Brazil are having their own will in their employment of their language, forcing the Portuguese Language Union to make 'alterations'/'simplifications' (or whatever such organisation regulates it; funny how English rightly lacks such due to unnecessary). Brazilian Portuguese is always very close to breaking free as a separate language, as has happened with Afrikaans versus Dutch, much to the fear of Portuguese.
