Santo Domingo, Republica Dominicana (est. 1496)

Dominican Republic is definitely in my have-to-travel list of countries. Perhaps even next year as I am already going to Miami for a couple of weeks and then later South America. I could stop by the DR between the two and get to know the country better. How many weeks would be necessary and what itinerary would be best to follow after landing in Santo Domingo ?

1. Rent a nice but affordable Air B N B, at around $40 bucks per day. There are ones that even have a view of the sea, for a decent price.
2. Rent a car (if you aren't afraid of insane driving).
3. Go go Colonial zone.
4. Few good malls - Agora, Sambil, Acropolis Center.
5. Visit the area of the Malecon (and at night a place there called, Plaza Juan Baron) good cheap foods and some rides.
6. Take a few ride son the city's metro system.
7. Other places to visit: Los 2 Ojos, Faro a Colon, The Zoo, and the Botanical Gardens.

A week and a half is enough.

Police, Judge and your lawyer are all in on it. The police will take your passport until you pay them enough. Uber drivers are all over Santo Domingo and if you want to go from there to the the North Coast or Punta Cana there is good bus service.

Good advice. Although I've driven for a while when I was in Brazil, which is likely as chaotic or even more than DR, I have to keep in mind Brazil isn't really a foreign country for me and I was usually driving around with cousins and/or friends. If I go to the DR, I'll probably be on my own. Uber and bus costs probably even make it cheaper than renting a vehicle, so there's that too.

Don't drive if you go there. scandinavian airlines has direct flights to Miami from Stockholm and from Miami to Santo Domingo American Airlines has the best routes. Most traffic goes through Punta Cana probably 70% of all air traffic.

Doesn't matter the insurance. The police/lawyer/judge want Gringo cash or you don't get your passport back. Even if you are not a fault they say hey this moto driver has injuries just pay his hospital bill and everything is fine. NEVER agree to go to a police station. Honestly if you have an accident where you know your were set up, keep driving. Dominicans always side with Dominicans. Gringos are an ATM machine.
