Islam protected us, ironically enough, before it was too late. We would not have kept such a high rate of mesolithic southern European DNA without it. That is the most important to us.
Slavic culture is what we assimilated into, like we assimilated into Roman culture, and Ottoman culture.
If I knew what my ancient ancestors spoke, I would have learned that language, spoken that instead, named my children by their names, and put it on par of importance with our DNA and our religion.

Of course it is being Muslim.
Islam is core of their national identity.

Without that, they would not exist in this form.

I disagree. I think some people became what is called Bosniak today because they simply had no other stronger identity. Like slavs that didn't consider themselves to be Croats or Serbs for some reason.

I don't know anything about which names are popular among Bosniaks. But as far as I'm aware muslims have something where they get islamic names? For instance, Mohammed Ali wasn't named such at birth.

Well, census results denay that, since number of Bosniaks is equall as number of Muslims in Bosnia.

Even in that time there was strong propaganda on Muslim population to declare themselves as Bosniaks, because in Yugoslavia they were known only as simply Bosnian Muslims.

    Check this song:

"I am Bosniak, my religion is islam, my language is Bosnian. I will declare myself that way on census"

Slavic names as Miroslav, Radovan, Dušan, Milan, Dragan, Milorad are not popular at all.
Bosniaks like MENA names as Jusuf, Ahmet, Ismet, Enver, Sejfudin etc.

It is easily recognizable Bosniaks among other South Slavic population by their alien names.

Yes, I know the group is considered to be muslims, I'm just saying that in the past (since the medieval ages) there have been people who didn't see themselves as Croats or Serbs and lived in what is today BiH. I think them becoming muslims was more because of assimilation. There are Bosniaks who have done DNA tests etc. which showed they were for instance Hungarian etc.
Some Bosniaks are R1a, some are I2 etc.
Also, Bosnian/Serbian/Croatian is a Slavic language, but Balkan was previously Illyrian.

But Serbs are known as orthodox and Croats as catholic? How often do you see an orthodox Croat? It's very unlikely and often they assimilate to being Serbs and vice versa.
All three ethnicities tell you which religion you are (ethnically).[/QUOTE]

I think in some cases this has to do with them not wanting to be seen as Serbs or Croats (christians). They don't want to be like Serbs so they choose other names. It's obvious why they would then choose Islamic names.

And since there has been wars between the people, obviously they don't want to associate themselves with people (who say they are Serbs/Croats) who commit genocides.

These were islamized Serbs and in less extent Croats who adopted islam during Ottoman rule.

Bosniaks Muslims are choosing their MENA names in last 500 years, to be different than local Christians, not only after last war, in which by the way, Bosnian Muslim side commited crimes against Serbs, too.

And naither Serbs want asociate with you.
They want freedom and independence of Republika Srpska.
