Russians and Belarussians remind me a lot of Scandanavians culturally and even physically. Ukrainians are like Med-Slavs.
    Spoiler!

    Cultural wooden house in Russia.

    Cultural wooden house in Norway.

You can call it Varyag, or Viking in 9th century.

Russians are closer to Polish people then what Polish people are to South Slavs. (Excluding Slovenians).

What's wrong with just being East Slavs?

No, I think the traditional classification is better. Differences...poles and czechs or croatians and bulgarians are also very different.

Varangian in Russia(11-13 century) used axes as the Vikings.
Used mainly slashing weapon. Northerners treated well with shields.

Scandinavia have much in common. A culture of ancient Rus' can only be compared with Scandinavia.

No they aren't. Black Sea isn't Mediterranean. By that logic the Russians living in Sochi are also "Mediterranean".

I agree, I would not use Russians as the poster boys for Slavic people - those would go to Poles/Slovaks moreso. Russian has a lot of Asiatic/Oriental influence, especially in recent history. Even South Slavs are questionable IMO (except for Slovenian and maybe Serbo-Croatian).

Poles and Slovaks has a Horner influence and Asian influence. Some can be converted with Global 25 software to majority typical Turkish or even Uzbek citizens. That is why they are so talented in the running competitions

Russia is such a large country that it should have it's own demarcation.
